Spatial and Temporal Variation Characteristics of Heatwaves in Recent Decades over China

Global warming and rapid socioeconomic development increased the risk of regional global disasters. Particularly in China, annual heatwaves (HWs) caused many fatalities substantial property damage, with an increasing trend. Therefore, it is great scientific value practical importance to analyze spatiotemporal changes HW China for sustainable disaster management. In this study, based on gridded maximum temperature product specific humidity dataset, evaluation algorithm, considering impact human body characteristics was employed generate daily state at light, moderate, severe levels period 1979–2018. Consequently, differences three were revealed, changing trend onset, termination, duration each subregion analyzed. The results show that levels, frequency had a significant trend, generally characterized by advancement onset postponement termination. influence moderate decreased gradually, light level occurring earliest terminating latest. Among seven subregions, largest happened be mainly XJ (Xinjiang), SC (Southern China), NC (Northern while variations termination noticeable levels. findings presented study can provide essential technological support national prevention mitigation adaptation extreme climate events.
